Painting Course Structure

Learning the language of drawing and painting is fundamental. In the first term the elements of line, tone, colour, composition, rhythm, harmony, balance, tension and structure are studied intensively through set projects normally linked to the School’s theme for the year.

Another important part of the course is an examination of the methods and materials of the artist. Every aspect of the construction of a painting is considered, from the support, to the making and compatibility of paint. A solid foundation is, therefore, established in the first term. As the course progresses, students are encouraged to explore their own ideas in depth. Regular personal tutorials are conducted to appraise work and suggest methods for further development.

Art history lectures, seminars and criticism contribute significantly to the course; serving to provide insight into the intellectual reasoning, emotional development and influences of known artists as well as the students and teachers themselves.

One of the many benefits of studying at Leith School of Art is the community atmosphere. This dialogue between students is actively encouraged within the School and the Painting Course shares some major lectures with the Foundation Course. Students exhibit alongside the other year-long courses in the two student exhibitions within the School. Upon completion of the course, students receive a Leith School of Art Painting Course Certificate.

Core hours are Monday to Wednesday, 9.30 – 4.30pm.
