An exploration of form, volume and shape using a range of materials.
Despite its often domestic popularity with woollen or cotton yarns, many other more unconventional materials can be used and crochet is a craft now applied by several contemporary artists including Toshiko Horiuchi MacAdam, Caroline Wells and Arline Fisch.
During this workshop students will learn the building blocks of crochet. Using a chunky crochet hook, you’ll learn basic stitches and experiment with different materials, from t-shirt yarn to plant fibres and cut up tetra packs – anything goes if it can be crocheted!
Through simple stitches and shaping techniques, the material of your choice can be manipulated and shape shifted into adventurous forms, directed by your hand, producing voluminous vessels or tactile collections of curiously shaped objects.
You’ll leave the workshop with an understanding of basic crochet stitches and the confidence to build further on those skills as well as an enriched sense of materials and their use with crochet.
