Over two days students will explore the relationships between colour, rhythm and harmony. As a starting point, the work of artists such as Paul Klee, Bridget Riley and Agnes Martin will be considered.

Using the rhythm of the breath as the foundation for an approach to abstract drawing, students will be guided through meditative, rhythmic mark-making exercises. Visiting the Botanical Gardens, the class will use watercolours to record precise sequences of colours found in the natural environment. Day two will see students produce an abstract painting based on these initial colour observations; handling acrylics and oils to create a layered painting in translucent colours.
