Drawing is a basis for many forms of art, both as a tool of enquiry and a means of seeing. This Summer School will explore how the surface qualities and expressive marks of a drawing can be developed into sculptural forms.

Using a series of drawing exercises as a starting point, students will have a chance to work with materials such as clay, plaster and latex, with the option to incorporate found objects and non-traditional materials into their pieces. Processes such as mould-making and casting will be covered, as well as strategies for combining different materials together. Students will be encouraged to consider contrasts in weight, texture and form. There will be an emphasis on experimentation; working quickly and allowing the hands to discover fresh ways of making art. By the end of the week, students will have gained confidence handling a selection of materials, having made a series of test pieces or ‘studio works’ and a more resolved final piece.
