The formal elements of a portrait - focus, tonal range and composition, can all affect the work’s emotional charge. This course offers students the opportunity for a sustained period of observation and creative experimentation in response to the human face.

The tutor will guide students step by step through the process of painting a portrait in acrylics. Using charcoal, students will begin by studying techniques for measuring proportions, simplifying the features using straight lines and exploring tonal values. A well-observed monochrome under-painting will then be made, blocking in simplified shapes before gradually refining and describing the features more precisely to achieve a likeness. With the architecture of the portrait in place, students will explore colour mixing and go on to create a full colour portrait. There will be different models throughout the week and the opportunity to make more than one finished portrait to practise and consolidate what has been learnt.
