The cityscape has long been an inspiration for artists who relish the opportunity to capture colour, light, movement and a sense of place. Taking the urban environment of Edinburgh with its wild landscapes, edgelands, architecture, people and history as a starting point, this comprehensive Summer School will take students through the complete process of creating a painting.
The first day will be spent drawing in the heart of the city. The week will continue back in the studio, developing sketches into print, collage and mixed media. Students will create a series of studies in paint, working with multiples to help their imagery evolve and transform. Painting techniques will be demonstrated, initially with a limited palette before opening up a range of colours and painting with broad, expressive marks. Smaller brushwork, use of line, and glazes will be introduced as students work towards a final painting. Contemporary artists and current art practice will be referred to throughout the week.
