A week of drawing and painting inspired by the vast plant, tree and shrub collection of the Royal Botanical Gardens in Edinburgh. This Summer School will guide students through the process of creating an individual painting from initial research drawings to final piece.
Beginning with exploratory pencil drawings observing directly from nature, students will be shown how to gather visual information and use thumbnail sketches to develop compositions. Back in the studio, students will learn how to work from their research drawings. As the final paintings in oil or acrylic progress, we will consider how to use tone to create depth, ways of suggesting texture through mark-making and how to use colour expressively.
