Drawing the clothed figure offers the artist a visual vocabulary to work with that can communicate a sense of time, place and narrative, giving clues to the person’s identity and status.

Students on this workshop will learn to build natural and convincing drawings of people as they are seen in everyday life. Starting with quick drawings, the tutor will demonstrate how to simplify complicated drapery and detail, trusting the shapes in the folds of the clothes to express the structure of the figure beneath. Students will then work on an extended drawing in charcoal aiming to capture the presence of the figure.
