Beginning with exercises focussed on materiality, mark, and surface, this course will use mark-making as a springboard into sculpture.
Students will have the opportunity to work with materials such as clay, plaster and latex, with the option to incorporate found objects and non-traditional materials into their pieces. Processes such as mould-making and casting will be covered, as well as strategies for combining different materials together. Students will be encouraged to consider contrasts in weight, texture and form. There will be an emphasis on experimentation; working quickly with the hands to create a selection of studio experiments. By the end of the week, students will have gained confidence in handling a selection of materials and will have developed their work into a final sculptural piece.
