Artists’ books are works of art that explore the form of the book; expressive objects in themselves with a wide variety of possible forms and meanings. Students on this Summer School will look at ways to create an artist book using a found object or text as a starting point.
Inspired by the transformed nature of a palimpsest - ‘something reused or altered but still bearing visible traces of its earlier form’ - a found object or text will be reinterpreted using printmaking, drawing, stitch and mixed media. Several book structures, both sewn and folded will be introduced and students will have the opportunity to work with printmaking techniques such as collagraph, drypoint and trace monotype. The course will also include a visit to the Modern Art Gallery to take inspiration from their collection of artist books.
