The city of Edinburgh contains within its borders a unique range of natural landscapes, from volcanic hills to seascapes. This comprehensive Summer School will take students through the complete process of creating a painting, from location drawing and development of imagery to a finished painting.
The first day will be spent preparing grounds and filling a sketchbook with work done in the landscape. The week will continue back in the studio, developing sketches into print, collage and mixed media. Students will create a series of studies, working with multiples to help their imagery evolve and transform. Painting techniques will be demonstrated, initially with a limited palette before opening up a range of colours and painting with broad, expressive marks. As students work towards a final painting, they will discover their own ways of working to create distinctive pieces of work. Contemporary artists and current art practice will be referred to throughout the week.
