The artist Grayson Perry has described the process of making art as ‘serious play’. During this inspiring and playful week, students will be introduced to a range of activities, guiding them towards a project that could be used as part of a portfolio for application to art college.

Looking at ways of finding inspiration and thinking creatively, students will learn how to make considered and personal visual responses to a subject, including a draped life model. Using sketchbooks, students will explore how artists approach the research and development aspect of making work and there will also be the opportunity to experiment with techniques in both two and three dimensional processes. Then, depending on students’ own particular interests, these responses will be further developed through drawing, painting, collage, sculpture or design. Past students’ portfolios will be shown and guidance given on what is required for a successful UCAS application, making this an ideal course for anyone interested in studying art and design who would like to experience a range of activities based on the Leith School of Art Foundation Course and first year at art college.
