Working with textiles can offer particular qualities of colour, surface and texture that make it quite unlike working in more ‘traditional’ fine art mediums such as drawing and painting. This week will offer students the opportunity to explore a variety of textile techniques, focusing particularly on pattern, surface and texture.
Starting with drawing from subject matter in the studio, students will then interpret their drawings by working experimentally with stitch, print, and construction processes such as felting, knitting or weaving. A collection of samples will be built up, which can be stored in sketchbooks, as well as informing a finished fine art textile piece in a chosen process. This Summer School is suitable for those with no previous textile experience and anyone wishing to build on their existing knowledge.
