In this week of abstract painting, students will explore colours found in nature, discovering a personal response that will grow into a multi-layered painting over the course of the week.
Initially working outdoors to record sequences of colours from the natural environment, students will return to the studio to make a series of abstract drawings based on a meditative awareness of the natural rhythms of the breath. Colour mixing will be covered in depth, with students working in both oils and egg tempera (making their own paint from scratch using pigments and egg yolk). The structure of the final paintings will be informed by a personal mode of repetitive mark-making, rooted in the rhythm of the breath. Inspiration will be taken from the work of artists such as Sean Scully, Agnes Martin and Paul Furneaux.
