This workshop will encourage students to expand and develop a new and exciting vocabulary of mark making using oil paint to describe the figure.

Taking inspiration from the model, students will explore the properties of oil paint and consider the tools that can be used to apply it; from alternative instruments such as spoons, rags, nails and sticks, to brushes in a variety of sizes that can be used to create loose, gestural marks. Over the course of the day students will learn to apply paint as descriptive marks that empathise with the models pose; finding an unexpected vocabulary of mark making through gesture, colour and composition. Students will finish the day with two completed oil paintings that unveil the honest emotion of the models pose.
