The elements of drawing and painting – mark-making, preparing and layering colours – can provide a meditative experience when the artist is present in the moment and gives the process their full attention. Students on this two-day workshop will create a pair of small abstract paintings, as well as a series of drawings all based on mindfulness of the rhythm of breathing.
The first day will consist of simple drawing exercises using a range of dry and wet media. Students will then be guided through the process of making a palette of colours using beeswax and pigments, applying ground colours to the two panels. Day two will allow students to ‘personalise their palette’ through a structured process of colour-mixing, to arrive at a harmonious chord of colours. Finally, these colours will be applied to the panels in stripes and other repetitive marks, keeping to the rhythm of the breath and exploring the quality of touch in painting.
