Looking at the work of Degas and working from a ‘tableau vivant’ setup, students on this workshop will observe the female nude in-situ.
Beginning with a limited palette, quick lively sketches will be used to explore the immediacy of pastels. As the workshop progresses, a wider more colourful palette will be introduced. Students will consider composition, form in space and colour, with reference to the work of artists such as Mary Cassatt, Odilon Redon and William Meritt Chase. At the end of the workshop, students will have created a number of small expressive studies, and a larger, more resolved piece of work.
