From community gardens and allotments to historic walled gardens and botanical palm houses, the city is interspersed with an abundance of green spaces. Students on this Summer School will draw inspiration from a variety of urban gardens around Edinburgh.
Working both on location (in the ‘plein air’ tradition, weather permitting) and in the studio, students will be encouraged to explore the creative potential of working with a range of drawing, painting and mixed media processes. Students will be supported in finding their own voice and interests in the everyday places and familiar green spaces around us. The start of the week will see students undergoing visual research on location using drawing, painting, and photography, and gathering other interesting materials, such as hedgerow cuttings, from their surroundings. Taking these findings back to the studio, the group will develop their individual responses further, creating a series of drawings and paintings which together reflect a sense of place.
