Course Staff

This Summer School will give students the opportunity to develop a printmaking practice at home without the need for a press, costly specialist equipment or a large studio space.

Incorporating relief, monoprinting, simple artists bookmaking and Hanko stamp making, this is a comprehensive course enabling students to develop the skills to continue an independent practice. Taking inspiration from the domestic environment, students will have the choice to explore themes such as interiors, gardens, still life or the self-portrait. This will be a personal journey with subject matter unique to each students’ interests. The week will begin by translating simple drawings into a suite of monoprints. Exploring the painterly qualities and the drawn line specific to monoprint with the addition of paper masks and stencils, enables unexpected and chance elements to appear within the work. The course will then move on to examining the colourful possibilities of relief printing through the reduction process and the layering of shaped plates. Prints will then be transformed in to simple artists books and signed with a Japanese inspired Hanko stamp bearing the initials or sigil of each student.

The week will include group discussions, lectures, practical demonstrations and one-to-one tutorials. Although working independently, the supportive group dynamic and sense of community is important at Leith and we will take time at the end of each day to reflect on the day’s work and progress.

All UK-based students will be provided with an A4 Leith School of Art sketchbook and set of 3 paintbrushes. These will be sent by post prior to the course. If booking within 3 days of the course start date we can not guarantee that these items will reach you in time for the beginning of the course. Students must source all other required materials and advice on suppliers will be provided upon booking. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions about this.
