Inspired by Phoebe Anna Traquair’s stunning Song Cycle murals at St Mary’s Cathedral, we will use linocut and screenprint to make a series of individual prints and a collaborative frieze.
The Song Cycle murals were made between 1888 and 1892 and illustrate the canticle Benedicite Omnia Opera. The murals depict a procession celebrating all creation, incorporating portraits of clergy, choir and artisans from the cathedral alongside important artists and writers as well as representations of nature in all its abundance.
We will start the weekend with a site visit to the Song School, looking at the work within the context of contemporary environmental concerns, making drawings and studies of the figures and wildlife depicted. Back in the studio, we will use linocut and paper stencil screenprint to make a series of individual prints and collaborative printed friezes.
