The remarkable Water of Leith, with its lush undergrowth, wildlife, hidden dells and networks of paths is the inspiration for this Summer School.
We will begin the week sketching along the waterway, taking notes and learning how to work effectively en plein air. A variety of different ways of drawing will be explored focussing on colour, light, surface and composition. While immersed in this natural world, students will have the opportunity to reflect on their surroundings, finding a connection with nature through their drawing and noticing the rich variety of plant and animal life.
Back in the studio, we will develop our drawings further, translating them into monoprints and acrylic paintings. We will explore and take encouragement from the writings of Robert MacFarlane and Kathleen Jamie.
