Learn about the key components of creating children’s picture books including: creating characters, visual storytelling, book structure, layout and design.
This week-long course is ideal for anyone looking for the time, space and support to develop ideas for a children’s picture book. We will explore characters and the settings they might inhabit, how to build consistent worlds around them, as well as page layouts and story pacing. Students will also look at how drawing from life can inform imaginative storytelling and make narratives richer and more convincing.
No previous experience is necessary. You can either bring an existing idea that you want to develop or use the course as a starting point*. By the end of the week, students will leave with an insight into the world of children’s picture books, a body of development work and a full picture ‘dummy’ book that fits with industry standards.
*Please note, students are welcome to make either wordless sequences or use a combination of words and images in their work. However, in terms of teaching and support, the focus of the week will be on visual storytelling rather than writing.
