Learn how to forage local plants for colour and make ink from botanical materials.
Students will be taken on a guided walk along the Water of Leith where they will learn about native plants and the colours they produce, while hearing local stories and histories. We will collect plants, using sustainable foraging practices, before returning to the studio to learn how to extract colour and make botanical ink.
After the ink has been made, we will learn about modifiers which extend the colour spectrum of each plant. We will create a botanical colour chart and paint with our inks. These paintings will emerge from both imagination and small study drawings you will make from plants observed along the water of Leith. Natural dyeing will also be introduced, and we will consider how this process creates connections to our local landscape, ecology, and history.
