A week of responding to colour through plein-air painting. Students will learn techniques for using oil paint outdoors, and how to represent light in the landscape.
Taking advantage of the varied parks and landscapes surrounding Leith School of Art, we will paint in a series of locations, improving our colour mixing and learning how to confidently apply paint wet-on-wet. Students will learn how to assess a colour’s tone, hue, temperature and saturation in relation to those around it, in order to build up rich, vibrant paintings of the locations we visit. Working outdoors presents the challenge of changing conditions and so students will be encouraged to respond intuitively as their paintings develop.
Towards the end of the week, we will take our paintings back to the studio where we will find ways to synthesise our experiences on location into a resolved painting.
