Christian icon-painting is currently enjoying a revival in western churches as well as the Orthodox Church. Students on this introductory course will use egg tempera to create an icon painting, working from an existing portrait-icon of their own choice and using traditional techniques.
Guided by practical demonstrations, students will learn how to make and use egg tempera as a painting medium. The group will practise drawing the forms of the icon with a fine-pointed brush, and learn how to build up layers of translucent colour for both the face and the areas of clothing. As well as these practical techniques, the course will include discussion of the visual language, symbolism and spiritual meaning of icons as ‘sacred portraits’.
By the end of the week, students will have completed an icon as well as a series of preparatory studies. (Gilding will not be included.) No previous experience of icon-painting is required, but some drawing experience will be helpful.
