Looking at the work of Degas, and working from a ‘tableau vivant’ setup, students on this workshop will draw a female model and explore the medium of chalk pastel.
Beginning with a limited palette, we will explore the immediacy of pastels through quick, lively sketches. As the workshop progresses, a wider more colourful palette will be introduced. We will consider composition, form in space, and colour, with reference to the work of artists such as Mary Cassatt, Odilon Redon and William Meritt Chase. At the end of the workshop, students will have created a number of small expressive studies, and a larger, more resolved piece of work.
