Printmaking

Annette Laing

Artist’s Statement

I am a multidisciplinary artist working across print, sculpture, and photography. Nature is my main inspiration. I like to really look at natural objects and focus in on them. It is by zooming in on their features that their true beauty is revealed. Different shapes and patterns begin to emerge showing the perfectly imperfect.
Back Off has been inspired by the colours and patterns seen on a Mandarin Goby Fish. This is a little fish that can be found in the Pacific ranging approximately from the Ryukyu Islands to Australia.
Don’t let its beautiful outer appearance fool you, those colours and patterns are there as a warning to keep your distance. If a predator ventures too close, they are likely to be disappointed as this fish’s skin has a foul taste!
I suppose the message is don’t judge a book by its cover!

Biography

I am currently based in Stirling. Next year I plan to build on my printmaking practice independently by becoming a member of a professional print studio.
