Figure

Annie Lacey

Artist’s Statement

I draw, paint, stitch and weave. My images come from figures and flowers in nature real and imagined. Literature and mythology inform my visual thinking. I love Golden Age illustration, Vogue fashion illustration.
I love the way the linear looseness of thread travels through human hands to become something solid and something shared.
I’m inspired by green spaces, I want to catch the spirit of place as part of my images. I try to be in places at different times and during different seasons to see how light reveals and hides what is continually present. I create intuitive responses to the natural world and its inhabitants.

Biography

My interest in art is life-long. I began drawing, painting and tapestry weaving as a teenager. I became a languages teacher and mother while my art training and interests toddled alongside children for a while.
My teaching skills grew to teaching art. I’m committed to hands-on making. Seeing and feeling how real materials happen is a valuable experience not to be missed.
I walk a lot for quiet, talk a lot for fun and always enjoy the company of cats.
