Hattie Gledson

Artist’s Statement

The starting point for this body of work was the word Stillness.
I have been aiming to capture fragments of people’s day-to-day lives; a family reunion, a conversation between friends or a quiet moment alone. Many of the images I have been working from have not been posed for so I think they have a relaxed quality, picking up on the pleasant idleness of people I have spotted whilst walking around the city.
I have been experimenting with a subjective palette when making this body of work which is something I’ve found interesting. Having taken inspiration from artists such as Salvatore Fiorello I’ve been able to explore colour in a different way. I hope that some of these paintings have a cheerful palette which is reminiscent of the spring and summer time.
By working “alla prima” I have been able to keep fluidity in my mark making when depicting the figure, which I think adds a sense of immediacy to these paintings. This relates to my idea of trying to represent a fleeting moment in time.
