Figure

Lorraine Balfour

Artist’s Statement

Born in Dundee, based in Stirlingshire. I am interested in many subjects but I am presently focusing on the figure, creating a likeness and exploring the application of oil paint through mark making, colour and texture in my art. This year I found that some of the techniques used in the course were insightful and helped me to explore and see skin tone in an analytical way. This practice informed the artwork image ‘Michael’. I also surprised myself with my works created using soft pastels and feel that I have grown to enjoy working with this medium. Image 2 ‘Shoes or Boots?’ is a quick pastel drawing that was created from an online session during lockdown and was inspired by the artist Toulouse-Lautrec.

Biography

Prior to attending the year long figure course at Leith School of Art I studied Art and Design part time/evening classes at Edinburgh College of Art & Edinburgh University gaining my HNC and continuing further studies in Art History and Literature to inform my art practice. Attending LSA this year has been invigorating, having a full day studying the figure, exploring the anatomy, painting, drawing and printmaking. I look forward to attending the course again next year and immersing myself further into the course and finding my own style
