Role

Tutor

Ben joined the School in early 2017, and teaches a Drawing & Painting the Figure evening course as part of the Short Courses programme.

Ben graduated Fine Art MA at the University of Edinburgh and Edinburgh College of Art. He also holds a PGDE in Art and Design from the University of Edinburgh.

The subject of Ben's work is the human figure - often, although not always, isolated. He avoids painting images with a direct narrative content and is interested, rather, in the borderlines that humans occupy between the physical, the cerebral and the spiritual. His work increasingly seeks a direct empathetic response from the viewer.

While his paintings are exclusively in oils, Ben's drawings are predominantly executed in charcoal or graphite, often combined with ink or acrylic on board canvas, paper or glass.

Alongside his artistic practice, and teaching at Leith School of Art, Ben teaches Art and Design at Dunbar Grammar School, where he has worked since 2008. He has exhibited work extensively across the UK, in both solo and group exhibitions, and regularly works on private commisions.
