This practical and reflective course introduces students to the National Galleries of Scotland as a rich creative resource.
Over three days, students will learn to actively use gallery collections—not just as places for quiet observation, but as sources for analytical drawing, material experimentation, and compositional invention.
Through visits to the National Galleries, you will learn how to read artworks with a maker’s eye, examining technique, structure, subject, and intent. These observations will then be translated into hands-on studio work—combining transcription, stylistic appropriation, and full re-imagining.
By the end of the course, you will have developed both practical studio outcomes and lasting skills in how to confidently approach and use public collections as part of your own artistic process.
