Develop a personal visual language where the work builds directly from the immediacy of the maker.
Drawing inspiration from a range of gestural abstract artists from the mid-20th Century onwards, we will focus on a series of exercises which enable us to develop techniques to paint in this style. By abandoning subject matter, the resulting works will be a means of recording the raw act of painting – an aesthetic history of something intuitive and free.
Following a tutor-led demonstration, students will explore the processes of invention and chance. With techniques like dripping, pouring, splashing and smearing paint, students will unlearn the need to stick to a carefully planned outcome, developing their creative intuition and capturing the intensity of their physical motions.
Relevant artists include: Jackson Pollock, Lee Krasner, Franz Kline, Joan Mitchell, Pat Steir, Ian Davenport, Christian Frosch, Christopher Le Brun and Oscar Murillo.
