A container is an intriguing object holding something unseen, its contents only revealed upon opening.
A parcel, a casket, a present, a reliquary: all are imbued with an element of surprise and mystery. Artist books often also have this quality, with hidden areas that can be uncovered and revealed, the work unfolding from within.
Using objects which are meaningful to each student as a starting point, we will make our own artist books with hidden elements and spaces to contain things. Simple printmaking, drawing and collage will be used to make the contents of these books, giving you the chance to experiment with processes as well as learn about specific techniques in bookbinding.
