A workshop on the fundamentals of colour in painting; from accurately mixing the colours we observe, to selecting a colour palette in order to harness the full visual impact of colour.

The tutor will demonstrate colour mixing with oil paint, using the colour wheel to mix both vibrant and muted colours, as well as finding complementary pairs. We will then build an understanding of warm and cool colours and the proprieties of different pigments. We will learn how to mix perceived colour in a still life, consider the effect colours have upon each other when placed together, and experiment with manipulating colour choices to control the mood of a painting. In the afternoon, students will work on a rich, colourful oil painting with the tutor on hand to give in-depth support.
