Water is a subject that continues to captivate artists for its complexity and ever-changing surfaces.
This workshop is an opportunity to get out on location and observe the subject in both natural and constructed contexts – along the Water of Leith and the unique Drumsheugh Baths Club. Inspired by a range of contemporary artists such as David Hockney, Victoria Crowe and Peter Doig, we will explore different approaches to conveying the light, reflections and movement of water through a series of studies using mixed media.
Demonstrations will be given on how to use water-based media to express fluidity, and manipulate dry materials on the paper’s surface to convey reflection. Students will gain confidence in capturing a convincing impression of a subject that is constantly shifting in front of them, and learn how to make sense of its complexity. There may even be the opportunity to draw a swimmer or two!
