Course Staff

A week dedicated to exploring the process of transforming observational work into abstract mixed media pieces.

We will begin the week with observational sketching inside the school and in the surrounding area. From these initial drawings, we will then look at ways to simplify them while retaining their original essence.

Each student will create their own individual colour palette and prepare painted paper to use in collage. Throughout the week, there will be demonstrations of various mixed media processes including the use of inks, pastels, acrylics and graphite.

Towards the end of the week, students will develop their work into larger mixed-media pieces which occupy a territory on the edge of representation. The work of Helen Frankenthaler, Wilhelmina Barns-Graham and Richard Diebenkorn will be explored, and the course will feature a relevant gallery trip.
