Artist’s Statement

Walking into the old quarry during lockdown brought back many memories of the rumble of the red lorries carrying rubble through the village. The atmosphere of the once busy but now quiet disused quarry sparked my imagination.
The hillside where man has gouged out, and blown up, the ancient volcanic lava and sedimentary rocks has created a manmade scar and hole in the rolling hills.
This sculptural landscape of towering cliffs, cracks, strata and fractures has inspired a series of paintings, where the tension between the forms and fragility of the lines, connecting to and influenced by my knowledge of geology.

Biography

Having stop working a few years ago I’ve spent more time on the things I enjoy and thrive doing. Finding challenge and enjoyment from attending various art courses the 2 day Drawing Course in particular made me realise that I wanted to continue this learning. The 3 day Painting course with an emphasis on learning through a series of projects has given me the time and space to learn for myself. There have been lots of exciting lightbulb moments. Importantly I’m also becoming more independent in my thinking and practice and I’m now excited about where I go now.
