Kenneth Le Riche Visiting Tutor

This unique two-day workshop allows students to fully immerse themselves in the process of making an oil painting.

Following a tutor demonstration, we’ll learn how to stretch a canvas, before making and applying size and then using gesso as a ground. With pigment, linseed oil and beeswax, you will be guided in how to make your own oil paints from scratch using a muller.

We’ll then move on to our subject matter. Working from a still life, we’ll develop compositional ideas through drawing and introduce the technique of imprimatura – an initial layer of colour applied to the ground.  There will be guidance on applying oil paint to your canvas and understanding the varying viscosities and drying times of different paints.

During the remainder of the workshop, you’ll spend time working on your painting and exploring how these traditional techniques can be used with a contemporary perspective. By learning how to make everything by hand, we gain a deeper relationship to the materials we are using.

All core materials provided. Concession rates are available.
